Fibromyalgia and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity are sister conditions — different primary triggers, but the same underlying machinery of an over-sensitized nervous system.
Fibromyalgia and MCS overlap heavily because both are forms of central sensitization — a state in which the nervous system amplifies signals that should be minor. In fibromyalgia the amplified signal is pain; in MCS it is the response to chemical exposure. They frequently occur in the same person, share much of the same biology, and respond to many of the same calming, load-lowering strategies — but they are still distinct conditions with distinct primary triggers.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread musculoskeletal pain, profound fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, and 'fibro fog.' Like MCS, it's a clinical diagnosis — tests read normal because the problem is nervous-system signal processing, not tissue damage.

Sharing a mechanism does not make them the same illness. Fibromyalgia's defining feature is widespread pain; MCS's is reaction to chemical exposure. A person can have one without the other. The practical takeaway is that the conditions are best understood as sister conditions: treat the shared central sensitization, but respect that each has its own primary trigger to manage.
Because the two share so much machinery, the same approaches help both. Calming an over-sensitized nervous system — lowering chemical and stress load, improving sleep, gentle pacing — tends to ease symptoms across the board.
