You cannot change the genetics that made your system less able to clear chemicals. But you can change how much it is carrying and how well the pathways you do have are supplied — and both of those meaningfully affect how you feel day to day.

The useful way to picture it is a bucket. Yours is smaller than average, every exposure adds to it, and symptoms arrive when it overflows. That is why the same perfume that is fine one day flattens you the next: what changed was not the perfume, it was how full the bucket already was. This is support, not a cure, and it works alongside avoidance rather than replacing it. But it is the part of this condition where consistent effort reliably buys you room.

Before any support strategy makes sense, it helps to understand the two mechanisms that drive MCS reactions. Neither is about being "too sensitive." Both are measurable, documented, and explain what is actually happening.

How Do You Support the Detoxification Pathways That Are Impaired in MCS?

Through nutrition and exposure reduction, not through a protocol. The liver clears toxins in two phases and MCS patients often have genetic bottlenecks in both, so supporting those pathways matters more than pushing them.

The liver detoxifies in two phases: Phase I (CYP450 enzymes, including CYP2D6) turns fat-soluble toxins into reactive intermediates; Phase II (glutathione, glucuronidation, sulfation, methylation) makes them water-soluble for excretion. Phase I Support

Methylation Support

Methylation — supported by methylcobalamin, methylfolate, and B6 — handles downstream clearing of toxin metabolites. Elevated homocysteine (above approximately 10–12 μmol/L) is a practical marker of impaired methylation. Testing before supplementing is advisable: some individuals react to methyl donors. Antioxidant Defense

Every chemical exposure generates reactive oxygen species that deplete antioxidant reserves. Why Standard Oral Glutathione Often Doesn't Work

The enzyme gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in the GI tract breaks down standard oral glutathione before it reaches systemic circulation. Most capsule-form glutathione delivers limited benefit as a result. This is not a labeling problem — it is a basic absorption chemistry problem.

Forms That Work Better

Liposomal glutathione (phospholipid encapsulation bypasses gut degradation), S-acetyl glutathione (stabilized form), and NAC (N-acetylcysteine — the body converts it to cysteine and synthesizes glutathione internally) are the primary alternatives. MCS-Specific Cautions

Air Filtration

HEPA removes particulates; activated carbon adsorbs VOCs and fragrances. For MCS, carbon is essential. Units with 10–15+ pounds of activated carbon for bedroom-sized spaces. Safe Building Materials

Pressed wood (MDF, particleboard), new carpet, and conventional paint off-gas formaldehyde and VOCs. Solid wood, metal, tile, and natural fibers reduce formaldehyde load. Low-VOC paints (AFM Safecoat, ECOS) minimize off-gassing. Two-week minimum bake-out (heat + maximum ventilation) before occupying newly renovated space.
