What DNRS, Gupta, MBCT and CBT studies actually measured

A reference page. Every brain-based approach offered for MCS has a study behind its claims. Here is what each study measured, in whom, against what — because the outcome measured is the only thing a study can speak to.

What we know

Outcomes are not interchangeable. A study can show better coping without showing fewer reactions; fewer reported reactions without showing restored tolerance; restored tolerance to one chemical without transfer to others. Read the outcome column before the result column.

What the evidence shows

MBCT — Hauge 2015. Randomized, 69 people with MCS, usual-care control, one-year follow-up. Measured: overall MCS illness status, anxiety, depression, illness perception. Found: perception improved; status, anxiety and depression unchanged.

MBCT — Skovbjerg 2012. Randomized pilot, 37 people. Measured: psychological distress, illness perception. Found: no between-group difference; participants reported better coping and sleep.

MBSR — Sampalli 2009. Controlled, small, mixed MCS/CFS/fibromyalgia. Measured: distress and quality of life. Found: improvement in distress. Not MCS-specific; no reactivity outcome.

DNRS — Guenter 2019. Uncontrolled survey of 102 workshop attendees with an average of five diagnoses each. Measured: self-rated symptoms and function. Found: reported improvement. No control, no blinding, presented at a conference. DNRS randomized trial in ME/CFS and Long COVID: recruiting, no results, no MCS arm.

Gupta/AIR — clinical audit. Self-rated health and function across sixteen conditions, no control. Found: 85% reported improvement in the MCS subgroup. Advertised on the MCS page as an RCT; it is not. AIR’s actual randomized studies (CFS 2012 pilot, fibromyalgia 2020 pilot, Long COVID fatigue 2023) do not include MCS.

CBT — European studies, mostly small and uncontrolled. Measured: distress and coping. No study measured chemical tolerance.

Not one study in this list measured, with an objective challenge, whether participants could tolerate a chemical that previously produced reproducible reactions. That is the outcome every cure claim depends on, and it has not been tested.

What the registry is answering

The same outcome grid, filled in by thousands of people meeting the criteria, method by method — including the tolerance outcome no study has measured.

Where we stand

Every brain-based approach studied in MCS measured perception, distress or self-rated function. None measured restored tolerance. Claims of cure are claims about an outcome nobody has tested.
